On 28 January 2024, the Mona Lisa was attacked again. This time with soup. "What is more important, art or the right to healthy and sustainable food?" they shouted. If they had satire that tapestries hung by the dignitaries to show off their status and the satire of CARTOON NO.1 - Substance and Shadow (1843, John Leech) depicting the hungry masses in front of them, I could respect the act as art, but unfortunately, what they did was not a real action to solve the problem, but an extremely safe performance - just only that. It's a really stupid thing to do, treating one of the values that go hand in hand to be human, art and culture, as something that is not necessary.

Funnily enough, there are people in Korea who are exactly like that. They build apartments in front of the Joseon royal tombs, a UNESCO heritage site, and shout, "It's the living that count, not the tombs of old dynasties that prevent you from building an apartment. I'll paraphrase this statement. "What's more important. Cultural heritage or living space?" It is not the question. Neither is the ranting of those who defaced the Mona Lisa a question.

Any kind of protest movement involves discomfort. But where is the justification for discomfort when the value of art itself is set aside as unnecessary to human survival? The idea that art should be destroyed for the sake of the latter touches on the rejection of other religions by principled religious people.

It is tempting to demand that they be made unsafe, but as a cosmopolitan, I think that give them a thorough education in the arts. Let them live as human beings, not as animals. ART MAKETH MAN.
